In narrative longform improv editing is an essential skill. It’s not only how we move the story forward, but how we direct it, shift perspectives, and create rhythm and surprise. While sweeping a scene is very practical, in long form narrative improv it can become rigid and repetitive, so in this workshop we will learn a few soft edits that will help you direct stories in a more engaging, visually appealing, and interesting way.

We’ll cover:

  • How to recognize the moments that call for an edit

  • How to edit by pulling strings from the scene and not ideas from our mind

  • How to use narrations & monologues as edits

  • How to transition scenes in a slower, more cinematographic way with different tools

About Rocío Barquilla

Rocío is a dynamic Spanish improviser based in Valencia, where she wears multiple hats as director, producer, headmaster and performer at The VLC Playground. Now she’s also embarked in the crazy task of being the Artistic Director of Narrativa Improv Fest!

Her improv journey kicked off in Slovenia a decade ago, performing in English. This challenge fueled her passion for the international improv scene across Europe and beyond. She found a community of like-minded and open-hearted people in improv, and she is never looking back!

Inexplicably funny, emotionally available and introvertedly social, Rocío loves exploring the unknown through acceptance, trust, storytelling, a million resources and alternative dimensions of reality - whether it implies comedy, longform, freeform, abstract, sensitive improv or life. She's co-founded several groups to explore everything from abstract and sensitive improv to feminist comedy, always pushing the boundaries of what's possible on stage.

With a Master’s in Applied Theater, Rocío also loves using spontaneous creativity not just for entertainment, but also as a powerful tool to facilitate workshops about personal development, learning, problem solving, etc.

When she's not doing improv, she’s enjoying the company of her two Slovenian cats at home with some tea.
