This workshop is designed for BEGINNER improvisers. See our FAQ for workshop level descriptions.

Great improv stories are born while being felt, discovered, and followed. This introductory workshop is designed for anyone who’s curious about how to start doing longform narrative improv. We’ll explore how to structure a story without forcing it, tighten the loose ends, double down on what’s already happening instead of rushing forward or inventing more, and let yourself be surprised by the plot twists that naturally emerge. All this while having fun as the story moves forward, of course!

You’ll learn how to:

  • Recognize the core of your story and build from it

  • Deepening what’s already in play instead of rushing forward

  • Spot and support emerging themes and patterns

  • Let the story breath, have fun, surprise yourself

  • Train your script writer and director's mind in improv!

About Rocío Barquilla

Rocío is a dynamic Spanish improviser based in Valencia, where she wears multiple hats as director, producer, headmaster and performer at The VLC Playground. Now she’s also embarked in the crazy task of being the Artistic Director of Narrativa Improv Fest!

Her improv journey kicked off in Slovenia a decade ago, performing in English. This challenge fueled her passion for the international improv scene across Europe and beyond. She found a community of like-minded and open-hearted people in improv, and she is never looking back!

Inexplicably funny, emotionally available and introvertedly social, Rocío loves exploring the unknown through acceptance, trust, storytelling, a million resources and alternative dimensions of reality - whether it implies comedy, longform, freeform, abstract, sensitive improv or life. She's co-founded several groups to explore everything from abstract and sensitive improv to feminist comedy, always pushing the boundaries of what's possible on stage.

With a Master’s in Applied Theater, Rocío also loves using spontaneous creativity not just for entertainment, but also as a powerful tool to facilitate workshops about personal development, learning, problem solving, etc.

When she's not doing improv, she’s enjoying the company of her two Slovenian cats at home with some tea.
