The (Improvised) Improvised Play
Improvising a narrative is sometimes complex and often approached based on narrative structures: Hero’s Journey, Storyspine, etc. But what if we could throw all of it through the window and just *improvise* our improvised play?
In this workshop we will explore different aspects of creating a play without following a pre-written narrative structure. Using scenework, tools like the Kaleidoscopal narration technique, and the live-analysis of our patterns, you will learn to rely on your instincts, play fully with your partner in the moment, and activate your director’s brain when you are offstage. And because one does not improvise improvising an improvised play, you will get a full toolbox to develop your skills out of it.
We are all creatures of stories, discover the one in yourself!
About Gael Doorneweerd-Perry
Gael has been doing improv for over 15 years, starting in Strasbourg and now in Amsterdam. He's the co-founder of Flock Theatre, Anananas & Pampamplemousse (formerly La Carpe Haute), the SIN (a network of improvisers across Europe), and Safe Play, a community focused on creating a safer improv environment. After leading IMPRO Amsterdam, he's now the co-Artistic Director of Improfestival Karlsruhe and the Flock Festival in Amsterdam.
Gael loves teaching and performing around the world, often with his partner on and off stage, Laura Doorneweerd-Perry. They toured with their show "Object of Affection" before settling in Amsterdam to launch Flock Theatre, where they produce unscripted theatre and collaborate with other artists.
His latest projects include fun and unique duo shows with Diego Ingold, Inbal Lori, and Katy Schutte. Gael’s improv style is playful and heartfelt, blending physicality, kindness, and a dash of craziness
